Municipal schemes

Cheaper health insurance via Menzis

With health insurance by Menzis, you're properly insured for less. If you already have insurance with Menzis, you can make use of this scheme straightaway. If you're not insured with Menzis yet, you can switch at the end of the year. Take a look at www.gezondverzekerd.nl for more.

Special assistance

Some expenses are essential, but what if you cannot pay for them yourself? You may be eligible for special assistance if that's the case, though only if there is nowhere else that will reimburse the cost.

Extra support for single-income families

If you have a partner with little or no income, you may be missing out on certain allowances from the Tax and Customs Administration. If so, you can apply for special assistance to compensate.

Individual income support

If you have been living on an income at the basic welfare level for at least three years, if you are aged between 21 and the pension age, and if you have no prospect of a higher income, you are eligible for extra income support once every twelve months.

Student allowance

If you are in education and you are receiving support under the Fees and Educational Expenses Act (WTOS) or student finance (WSF), but you are not able to work during your studies due to an illness or impairment, you can apply for a student allowance.

Exemption from municipal tax

If you are on a low income and you do not have any assets, you may be able to apply for an exemption from some municipal taxes. Examples include property tax, sewer tax and waste tax. You will still need to pay any dog tax yourself. Take a look at www.gbtwente.nl for more information (search for kwijtschelding, or exemption).

Adult Fund for Sports and Culture

If you would like to play sports, take a course or take part in an activity, the Adult Fund for Sports and Culture may be able to pay you a contribution toward sports, cultural, educational, leisure or social activities. You will also be given free membership of the library in Hengelo. If you have any questions or would like to apply, visit: Adult Fund for Sports and Culture

Specifically for families with children

Youth Fund for Sports and Culture

Sports, music lessons and creative courses all cost money. Some parents may struggle to pay for these activities. The Youth Fund for Sports and Culture can help these parents out. Nationwide schemes

Tax credits

The Tax and Customs Administration grants certain tax credits. These are discounts on the amount of tax you need to pay. Different types of tax credits are available, each with their own terms and conditions. Take a look at www.belastingdienst.nl for more information.

Benefits

You can apply for housing benefit, childcare benefit and a child budget via the Tax and Customs Administration. Take a look at www.toeslagen.nl for more information.

Water authority tax

You can apply annually for a (partial) exemption from the pollution charge and resident charge. If you've been granted an exemption by the municipality, this does not automatically mean the water authority will grant an exemption too. Take a look at www.gblt.nl for more information.

Student finance and WTOS allowance

Young people aged between 18 and 30 who are in full-time vocational education are entitled to student finance. Students aged 18 and over in higher education can apply for an allowance. See www.duo.nl for more.

Child benefit

Parents or carers in the Netherlands can apply for child benefit for children up to the age of 18. This benefit is paid by Sociale Verzekeringsbank (SVB). If you have a child living at home, aged between 3 and 18, who needs intensive care, you may be entitled to double child benefit. See www.svb.nl for more.

Supplementary Benefits Act (UWV)

If you live in the Netherlands and are aged between 18 and the pension age, you may be entitled to a supplementary payment up to the social minimum income if you:

  • receive benefits from the UWV;
  • are ill and your employer has reduced your wages;
  • receive sickness benefit from your (former) employer.

If you have a partner, the UWV will also consider the age of your partner and whether you have any children under the age of 12.

Please contact the UWV for full details. See www.belastingdienst.nl > toeslagen for more information.

Food bank

The food bank helps people who temporarily do not have enough money to buy food. Food parcels are intended as emergency support. You can apply yourself, but an official institution will need to assess your financial situation and help you with your application. You will be eligible if you have less money left over than the minimum standard listed below after paying your fixed expenses. For more information, visit www.voedselbankennederland.nl.
